I takt med att dagarna gick så var det som att vi hittade vår gemensamma takt med familjen som äger Petani Beach Chalet på Perhentian Kecil.
Första dagarna var det en del folk, några dagar rentav fullt i de fem bungalowerna och många som åt i restaurangen.
Men så, efter förra helgen, så lade sig lugnet. Bara vi, i bungalow nummer fyra, och Petanifamiljen.
Vi har tyckt så mycket om att se deras dagar gå, mormor och morfar som sover i restaurangen men brukar vakna vid sju-tiden och rulla upp gardinerna för att öppna upp den fönsterlösa öppningen mot havet.
Femåriga Irfan som klär sig i sin skoluniform och blir skjutsad av morfar i båten till byn på vardagsmorgnarna. Och som kommer hem på eftermiddagarna och ivrigt springer för att leka med Milo och Jack.
Gulliga Ehan, mamman till barnen, och en gudomlig kock. Och som så generöst delat med sig av sina kökshemligheter till Patrik när han varit med henne i köket på kvällarna.
Hans receptbok har fyllts på, och Ehan har lärt ut hur hon gör sina himmelska fried noodles och den otroligt goda rätten med paprik sauce, bland annat.
Glada skratt från köket på kvällarna, Patrik som tappert försökt bemästra wokpannan lika smidigt som Ehan. Dofterna, de fantastiska råvarorna, och tillslut de färdiglagade måltiderna som burits fram på sina tallrikar och placerats på den fruktmönstrade vaxduken i grälla färger.
Azpol, barnens pappa, som alltid har ett leende och gärna ett skämt på lut. Lilla ettåriga Zahra som levererar high fives och förtrollande leenden på löpande band. Och som plötsligt lyckas somna, mitt i allting, mitt i restaurangen.
Milo och Jack har trivts så bra här, jag tror sällan jag har hört dem uttrycka så mycket kärlek till en plats där vi rest. De hade kunnat spendera mycket mer tid här, och mest av allt har de nog trivts i restaurangen som också fungerar som hela familjens vardagsrum. Det är här de umgås, äter och går ut och in från det lilla rummet innanför som verkar vara både sovrum/tv-rum/bönerum i ett, för hela familjen. Och där vi så självklart har fått vara en del av deras vardag.
Jag beundrar dessa människor, som med enkla medel har skapat detta sätt att leva, ljusår från alls våra svenska trygghetssystem.
Deras ställe ser inte mycket ut för världen, det saknas lite brädor här och var, bungalowerna är av enklaste slag och el saknas halva dygnet. Men här har vi mött en genuin värme. Varje dag har familjen generöst delat med sig, bjudit på massor av frukter, kex till barnen och mycket annat.
Sånt som de hade kunnat ta betalt för har de bara skakat på huvudet åt. Som när vi frågade om det gick – mot att vi betalade en slant för (den dyra) elen – att slå på det extra elaggregatet på dagtid när barnen var sjuka för att få fläkt. Eller snorkeln och cyklopet som vi lånade i tio dagar, och som egentligen kostar 20 kronor per dag att hyra.
Det har de absolut inte velat ha betalt för. (Och jag tycker att det så ofta är så, att de som inte har så väldigt mycket är mest benägna att generöst dela med sig av det de har.)
Och Ehans matlagningskunskaper blev inte till en prissatt matlagningskurs, utan ett generöst delande av det hon kan. Azpol skojar om att vi måste öppna en malaysisk restaurang hemma i Sverige; ”Petani restaurant” föreslår han, och vi lovar leende att fundera på saken.
Det är fint att bjudas in i människors liv på det här sättet, och jag har känt mig så tacksam när jag har sett våra barns välbefinnande här i detta synnerligen enkla men harmoniska liv.
Sista kvällen fick Milo och Jack varsin t-shirt av familjen, som de varit i byn och hämtat. Barnen blev så glada och stolta för sina tröjor. Och precis innan vi skulle gå mot båten för avfärd kom de med Petani-tröjor även till mig och Patrik.
Det var himla sorgligt att lämna. Men också fint. För vi lämnade ju med vetskapen om att vi på en liten ö utanför Malaysias östra kust har vänner att minnas med värme, och kanske en dag återvända till.
Nu är vi på väg igen. Storstadsliv några dagar, och ett VÄLDIGT efterlängtat återseende väntar.
