Vi slår upp fönsterluckorna och morgonvinden drar igenom vår enkla bungalow. Vi har väckts av fiskebåtarna som cirklar runt utanför Freedom Hut Resort, längst ute på Koh Jums södra udde.
Freedom ligger som en egen oas, bokstavligt talat vid vägs ände. Här är husen byggda i trä, det är springor mellan brädorna och finns inga glas bakom fönsterluckorna. Allting är öppet och nära naturen.
Vi har varken kylskåp, tv eller ens el hela dygnet runt, och njuter av den enkla tillvaron.
Lyxen på Koh Jum består av något helt annat, nämligen pudervita stränder, lugn och vajande kokospalmer.
Ön är en liten pärla, som ligger i princip mitt emellan Krabi, Koh Lanta, Phi Phi-öarna och Phuket, och till skillnad från grannöarna som fyllts allt mer av charterhotell och trånga stränder, är detta ännu en plats för lugn och ro.
På 90-talet och början av 2000-talet var Koh Jum backpackerns hemliga favorit-ö, dit man återvände för att bo i en bambuhydda för 20 kronor natten och njuta av friden och mat för några kronor tillsammans med de thailändska familjerna som drev de små resorten utan elektricitet och andra moderniteter.
Även här har förstås utvecklingen rullat på. Idag finns till och med nybyggda resorts med pool, pizzaugnar och internet på Koh Jum, men charmen är bevarad och ni behöver inte leta länge för att hitta en hängmatta, en enkel bungalow och en egen bit strand.
En promenad in mot ön via en liten skogsstig leder oss fram till Koh Jum village. Byn är inte stor, men här hittar vi lite strandleksaker, t-shirts, färsk ananas, flip flops och några restauranger. Här blandas turister med öns lokalbefolkning, som barnen som kommer från skolan en bit bort och den gamla damen som vinkar till oss från sin slitna veranda längs huvudgatan.


Färjan Tigerline trafikerar sträckan Krabi – Koh Lanta (och omvänt) med stopp för anslutning till Koh Jum. Pris från 400 b. Att tänka på är att anslutningstoppet sker på havet där man klättrar över från färjan ner i en långsvansbåt som kör er in till land.

Privat långsvansbåt kan vara ett smidigare alternativ, särskilt om ni är flera familjer som reser tillsammans. Cirkapris från Phi Phi Islands = 2500 b/båt och från Koh Lanta 2500 b. Resorna tar kring en timme. Ring er resort på Koh Jum och fråga om de kan hjälpa till med transfer och vad det kostar.
