Veckans krönika, om Dyke Rest, i Karlskoga tidning/Karlskoga kuriren:

 

Vi sitter i en minibuss. Milo och Jack i framsätet, jag och Patrik bakom tillsammans med ett brittiskt par och två killar från Tyskland.

Vi är på väg söderut längs Sri Lankas östkust, 2,5 timme på en ganska slingrig väg längs kusten.

Barnen är klädda i varsin splitterny Sri Lanka-tröja, cricketlandslagets blå och gula matchtröja. Tröjorna var en gåva från vår nya vän Mr Kadira, som driver ett litet guesthouse i kuststaden Trincomalee.



Det var där, på Dyke Rest, som vi flyttade in för fem dagar sen. En så oansenlig plats till det yttre, så enkelt och bara det absolut mest nödvändiga i det ganska lilla rummet.



Här saknas alla faciliteter som gör att vanliga hotell plockar stjärnor i hotellrankingarna. Ingen pool, ingen fungerande tv, ingen frukostmatsal, ingen vanlig restaurang med menyer och á la carte. Lakanen i vårt rum var solblekta och i olika färger och mönster.

Allt är av enklaste slag.

Utom två saker, som istället är extraordinära. Läget, och Mr Kadira.



När vi anlände och gick in i den lilla korridoren och svängde till vänster framför Mr Kadiras lilla skrivbord (”receptionen”) så såg vi det på en gång. Det turkosblåa havet, rakt framför oss, utanför den öppna dörren på Dyke Rests baksida. Med bara lite vit sandstrand emellan.


Vi kände oss välkomna direkt. Mr Kadira är en man med grånat hår, i 60-årsåldern, som skulle komma att lösa vad vi än frågade om under de närmaste dagarna.

Milo och Jack var som barn i huset från första stund, de togs om hand på finaste tänkbara sätt.

På kvällarna dukades middagar fram på ett rangligt plastbord på stranden, för trots att det inte fanns någon restaurang i ordets vanliga bemärkelse så gick det att få en ljuvlig måltid bestående av pinfärsk fisk och skaldjur, ris och curry.

Vi åt här varje kväll. Vi ville inte gå någon annan stans, det finns ingen anledning.

Vi pratade om livet med Mr Kadira. Hörde honom berätta om familjen han saknar, som bor långt borta i en annan stad. Men också om hans glädje över att få möta så många nya människor i sitt arbete.

Vi fick låna snorklar och cyklop gratis, och simmade ut strax utanför Dyke Rest och såg jättefina fiskar under ytan varje dag.

Som vi njöt av allt omkring oss, och varje gång vi kom hem möttes vi av ett leende och en stunds småprat, med många skratt och mycket värme.
Jag tänker på det nu medan vår minibuss skumpar fram på den stundtals ganska dåliga vägen, att det kommer bli många avsked under vår nio månader långa jorden runt-resa.

Många möten, många nya människor, nya berättelser, korta flyktiga meningsutbyten, samtal som varar en hel kväll, kanske flera.

Många kommer vi att glömma. Det är bara att konstatera, och det ligger lite i hela ryggsäcksluffandets natur. Man fortsätter vidare, mot nya platser, nya upplevelser, nya möten.

Men några av alla de här människorna stannar kvar i hjärtat. Det är som att det finns ett särskilt rum därinne dit några bara tar sig in och blir kvar. Oavsett avstånd och alla andra skillnader.

Som en grånad liten man i 60-årsåldern på ett oansenligt guesthouse på en strand på Sri Lankas östkust.
